I was approached by social services about a client that had been brought to their attention. The client had fallen in their home and broken their arm. They were now in a care home until the home could be made safe for their return. I inspected the house and could see there were hoarding issues as well as a build-up of decaying food and some considerable challenges around access to all the rooms. I went to meet the client in the care home and quickly realised that previous clear-ups had resulted in them losing possessions without permission and this resulted in a general distrust of people entering the home.
The main aim was to clear a walkway in the hallway and make a clear bedroom with access to the bed & a clean bed to sleep in. Clear the lounge floor making the walkway safe and clean the kitchen so there was a food preparation area. I worked through the property clearing out the rotten food and disposing of a build-up of rubbish in the form of old food containers, papers & general rubbish. The kitchen needed a deep clean and all the clean items were then arranged into cupboards clearing the work surface. The Lounge had a build-up of items so we sorted all the items into those we wanted to keep, dispose of stuff deemed as rubbish, created a folder system for paperwork & arranged the lounge to increase the space. The bedroom had accumulated the most clutter. The clothes were sorted and stored in the wardrobes available. Boxes were purchased to store handbags, Shoes, and larger items. An area was created for hair accessories etc and the bedside cabinet was cleared to make a useful stand for bedside reading, and medication. The bathroom needed all the items removed from the bath and floor and all toiletries were arranged in a neat moveable set of drawers.
The client was removed from the at-risk register after 1 month and continues to maintain control of the property and accumulation of clutter.
